  • Garden/Store update

    2023 was one of the most challenging years here at By Design Dahlias. 300 dahlias went in the ground in the spring, and came up vigorously, survived the frost, and were looking good, until somebody turned on the faucet in the sky, and forgot to turn it off. At first the plants drank it up, but as the ground became saturated, and the rain continued to fall, many plants couldn't handle the standing water, and 300 soon became 195.

    But I only lost a few varieties, and the plants that did survive were at least well watered, and generated healthy robust tubers.

    Blooms while reduced in number, stayed long - really long - and were still around by Halloween.


    Thanks to some eager helpers in my "Digging Up Dahlias Workshops"(see contact page for more information on those!!), every one of the remaining plants were dug up, carefully examined for disease, split with bleach cleaned tools each time, and stored for the winter.


    After 23 years of storing tubers, I have it to an art form, and thousands will come available for sale in the spring!!
